Purpose: The recent emergence of smartphone and app store enables new ecosystem of m-Health field and various devices or apps for m-Health are available in the market. But they were not systematically analyzed in Korea yet. In this paper, smartphone apps for medical applications were classified and analyzed to investigate the current state and trends in Korea.
Materials and Methods : Medical apps, developed in Korea, were classified by bottom-up and top-down trategy. Bottom-up strategy classified apps by the similarity of their functions and applied fields, which were registered in App Store and T-Store. Top-down strategy followed the classification method of mHealth Initiative, which was presented in "The 12 mHealth Application Clusters".
Result: Because the percentage of medical apps in the total apps was only 1-2 percent and the applications were limited to show general medical knowledge or advertise private hospitals, their current level was evaluated to have limits to be used by medical expertise, yet.
Conclusion: More systematic effort and investment to develop medical apps and system infrastructure are required to vitalize their medical application in Korea.
